Declan

With every piece of self-restraint in my body, I turned and walked away from the woman who’d come charging headfirst into my life and consumed all rational thought. After lying awake in my bed, tossing and turning and unable to rid my mind of Roselyne’s face, I decided I needed fresh air. The air in the palace was oppressive, the sweet scent of jasmine heavy and making me dizzy. I made my way outside the palace, gulping in lungfuls of fresh air. Nightfall brought cooler air than its predecessor, a welcome respite from the heat of end of summer days. I walked off the large porch and into the grass. Insects chirped nearby. A dim glow emitted from Roselyne’s window.

I needed to clear my mind. Being around Roselyne created a fog and muddied my every waking thought, making them indecipherable. Her presence clouded my judgment. When I closed my eyes, I only saw her face staring back, framed in silver. Being near Roselyne shouldn’t affect me this way. But I couldn’t deny the truth.

Footsteps crushed through soft grass behind me. I spun around to find Callum approaching. My friend’s face was painted grim, and I realized there was no reason for him to be outside the palace this late. I frowned, sensing trouble.

“What’s going on?”

Callum ran a hand through his blond hair.

“There’s a dead body in town.”

Fuck. A resurgence of crime is the last thing the faelands needed, especially with the betrothal ceremony tomorrow and the noble fae arriving.

“Who?”

He shook his head solemnly. “I’m not sure yet. One of the Daylight Guard sent a falcon to my tower. The body was found on the Street of Sins while she patrolled. I was on my way there when I spotted you outside. I figured you’d want to know.”

I sighed and dropped my head into my hands, rubbing my forehead with slightly too much pressure to be pleasant.

“I do want to know,” I said with a groan. What was going on in Solora? Although the city was large, until recently there was relatively no crime. For years, the humans and fae lived in relative peace side by side—until news of my betrothed began to spread. My people deserved better from me.

This was my fault. I’d been too distracted chasing Roselyne’s affections. I needed to start choosing my people over my bride.

I assessed Callum. “I need to tell Sloane. I can’t leave Roselyne alone.”

With a quick stop to Sloane’s rooms, I quickly filled my brother in on the situation in the city. He’d been asleep, with heavy-lidded eyes and a glazed expression on his face. With a yawn, he’d agreed to stay awake and keep watch over Roselyne while I was away.

I didn’t believe even the worst of Summus Nati would dare attack Roselyne while in the palace. Despite that, I felt more at peace knowing my brother kept guard for her while I wasn’t physically able.

A few minutes later, Callum and I made it to the crime scene. The rich scent of
